The whole process of bread making is not only simplified but also automated by a bread maker which makes it possible for you to bake your own breakfast each morning. While most bread making machines include a recipe book, here are some healthy ones that will make your meals not only tastier but also more nutritious.

  • Cinnamon Bread
    • Ingredients:
      • 1 ½ tbsp. canola oil
      • 2 tbsp. beaten egg or egg substitutes for vegetarians/vegans
      • ¾ cup low-fat milk at room temperature

      • 2 tbsp. coarse sugar
      • ¾ tbsp. salt
      • 1 tbsp. yeast, rapid rise or bread machine friendly
    • Filling:
      • 1 ½ tbsp. low-fat butter, margarine, whipped at room temperature
      • 3 tbsp. brown sugar
      • 1 ½ teaspoons cinnamon, grounded
    • Method
      • Mix the ingredients: milk, egg/egg substitute, canola oil, white flour and whole-wheat flour, sugar and salt in a bread maker tin. Set the machine to dough cycle.
      • After an hour and a half, once the bread maker is done mixing the ingredients, you can place the dough on a butter paper. Make sure you dust the paper with flour. Roll the dough into a rectangle and slather it with whipped butter/margarine.
      • Take a small bowl and mix the brown sugar and cinnamon. Mix it well. Sprinkle the mix on the dough and let it rest for at least 8-10 minutes. Cut the rectangle dough into even (about 1-inch wide) pieces. Join the top and bottom ends and twist it a couple of times. Place the strips on a pan that has been covered with a non-stick tin foil. You can also use canola oil cooking spray.
      • Cover the mix with a towel and let it sit for over 40 minutes or until the dough reaches twice its size. Preheat the oven and bake it until golden brown. The oven should be set to at least 350 degrees. Allow the dough to sit for 15 minutes.
    • Garlic and Herb Bread
      • Ingredients
        • ½ cup water at room temperature
        • 4 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil
        • 1 ½ teaspoon molasses
        • 1 tbsp. garlic, minced
        • 1 tbsp. basil, fresh and finely chopped
        • 1 tbsp. oregano, finely chopped
        • ¾ cup whole-wheat flour
        • 1 cup white flour
        • 1 teaspoon salt
        • 1 ½ yeast, rapid rise or bread maker friendly
      • Method:
        • Take a bread maker tin and mix molasses, olive oil, water, garlic, basil, and oregano. Add whole wheat flour and white flour to the pan. Just add a little salt in one of the corners of the pan. Make a well in the mixture and pour yeast.
        • Select the dough cycle on your machine
        • Once the dough cycle is complete, divide it into 4 equal pieces. Bake these pieces in the oven at 400 degrees for at least 12-15 minutes.
